History
J. Miller Flats was originally built in 1860 as a single family “model home” to help market the development and sale of townhomes in the to-be-filled Back Bay area of Boston. Back then, the Back Bay was still covered by the Charles River. Once the landfill and sellout were completed in 1867, the building was sold to Joseph Miller and family, who occupied it as their primary residence for over 100 years. In the 1920s, the front of the building was “lopped off” by wreckers so that Charles Street could be widened to accommodate the proliferation of automobiles. More recently in 1999, the townhouse was renovated and converted to the Charles Street Inn, a 9-unit, Victorian-style bed and breakfast. Then, in 2013, an affiliate of Thatch purchased the Charles Street Inn and converted it into an apartment-style hotel. Today, the building is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and the architecture of the entryway and common stair remain largely intact as they were in 1860. J. Miller Flats serve as a home-away-from-home for for travelers of all kinds, marrying modern convenience and independence with rich history.
What our guests say
We loved being a few floors up overlooking the vibrancy of this neighborhood. We enjoyed amazing coffee drinks and cinnamon rolls, nuts, one of a kind paper stores with lots of Boston history. It really feels like a family neighborhood inside Beacon Hill, all the runners on the Charles River, and beautiful botanical doorways mixed between historical and modern settings!

We walked to TD Garden for a Bruins game, local boutiques and local cafes and restaurants right outside the door. Definitely recommend staying here
